Family Planning

Ganesh refilled his own wine glass, and then cheerfully emptied the bottle into Sariel’s glass. The angel was looking querulous again. Talk of this wedding seemed to send him into a mood, and he wasn’t precisely certain as to the reason. Or reasons: Sariel always seemed to have reasons behind his reasons, wheels within wheels.

“So, you two anticipate having children?” the Hindu god asked. He noticed Sariel didn’t conceal his snort of derision.

“Oh, definitely,” Raziel cooed, looking dewy-eyed at an equally drippy Wotan. The Norse god put an affectionate arm across her shoulders.

“Uh-huh. How many children?” Sariel asked. Ganesh looked over at him inquisitively.

“Oh, I expect we’ll have an army! Maybe five, or six strapping boys!” Wotan bragged, squeezing his angel’s shoulders.

“What?” said Raziel.

“Maybe seven! Or eight! If there are twins!” Wotan elaborated.

“We’ll have one child: a girl!” Raziel protested.

"Yes!" agreed Wotan. "My boys will have a fine little sister. And she will go on the hunt! And learn the ways of the sword!"

“She’ll take ballet!" Raziel retorted. "And go to boarding school in Europe! And.... And learn to speak French!”

“Certainly my dear,” Wotan muttered, looking at his phone. “I need to take this. Fucking caterers….” He rose and departed the table, phone to his ear.

“And….” Raziel continued. “And she’ll dress in a little tiny sailor suit. And, and, she’ll never grow up.” The little angel had burst into tears.

Ganesh supplied a handkerchief, and Raziel wiped her eyes. “Er, she won’t grow up?” he asked.

“So I won’t have to watch her go away to college!” Raziel wailed.

“Raziel,” Sariel started, “You realize you don’t really-“

“Perhaps at college, she will meet a handsome Italian boyfriend!” Ganesh supplied.

“Yes?” sobbed Raziel.

“And, he will be heir to his father’s shoe business!"

"Really?" asked Raziel.

"And, she will help him extend the line into handbags.”

“You think so?” Raziel asked hopefully. She looked skeptical. “Huh. I dunno. If he’s into fashion, isn’t he likely to be gay?”

“Hm. Perhaps. Maybe he can be her best friend instead?”

“No, her boyfriend will a motorcycle guy,” Sariel supplied, his smile malicious. “And she’ll cut her hair in a Mohawk!”

“No! Not her lovely hair!”

“A purple Mohawk!”

“And how will she meet a, er, 'motorcycle dude' at Oxford?” Ganesh sniffed.

“Why the hell would she go to Oxford?” Sariel protested.

“OF COURSE she shall go to Oxford,” Ganesh insisted.

“English colleges are overrated,” Sariel snorted.

“She can go to the New World for law school,” Ganesh allowed.

“Georgetown.”

“HARVARD.”

“What if she doesn’t wanna be a lawyer?” Raziel asked.

“Why wouldn’t she wanna be a lawyer?” Sariel asked.

“That’s a bit ungrateful, turning down law school like that,” Ganesh sniffed.

“You’ve obviously spoiled her!” Sariel accused.

“Maybe she wants to be a photojournalist!” Raziel insisted. “A crusading photojournalist.”

“That’s no kind of career. There’s no stability!” Ganesh told her.

“What the fuck is she gonna crusade about?” Sariel asked.

“Uh, I dunno. ISSUES!” Raziel stated.

“What’s going on here?” Wotan asked sitting down again.

“Our daughter has a Mohawk,” Raziel sighed.

“And refuses to attend law school!” Ganesh supplied.

“And seems to think photojournalism is a career,” Sariel laughed.

“See my dear,” said Wotan, embracing Raziel. “This is why you have BOYS!”

and when sets foot in the red dust, he'll probably whip out a guitar and do a Green Day song.

No, David Bowie first!!! :D

Yep, been a marine biologist with a state agency for about 20 years - mostly fisheries management.

Oh, that's fun! I was a biology major, but got sidetracked into medical research. I still love critters though!

You're absolutely right - perhaps a Space Oddity/Rocket Man/Major Tom (Coming Home) medley (and he does love all of those for obvious reasons).
