Klokateer 31415, who worked as a receptionist for the being known in the human world as Charles Ofdensen, and who was quickly becoming better known by his nickname, Pie, peered into the old fashioned baby carriage. In his former existence, which he had abandoned to devote his life to the death metal band, Dethklok, he had had six younger brothers and sisters. But he could not remember any of them ever seeming so small.

“Jyoti,” smiled Kam.

“Jyoti,” repeated Pie.

“Lord Ganesh helped me pick the nickname. It means 'light,” apparently,” said the Cherub. He went back to pushing the carriage. The hulking Klokateer formed up alongside him.

“He's so very small.”

“He has apparently experienced no little trauma in his life. Honored Brother Sariel discovered that the Presence is apparently soothing to these children, and requested some angelic volunteers. So I asked to stay with him for some hours each week.”

“You go from watching a child to keeping another child?” asked Pie with a slight smile.

“I find it soothing as well,” Kam explained. “And Lord Elias, although he is dear to me, is a bit mischievous, as even his fathers will admit. And this is a lovely park! I find it amusing that sometimes the humans who walk here will mistake me for the child's parent, even though, even were I human, there is so little resemblance.”

Pie regarded Kam. It was true: the sandy-haired angel walking next to him looked nothing like the little dark boy nestled peacefully in the carriage. Kam much resembled what was called to mind when humans used the adjective, “cherubic:" were he human, he would have been on the short side, with a round, baby face that, Pie guessed, he would never outgrow, as he was immortal.

Rather strange, the concept of immortality. Pie had heard many things about angels, and he had heard other angels talk of themselves, but he had learned long ago to disregard gossip, and pay more attention to his own experience. What struck him most of Kam was that the being was almost always smiling. And it was not a forced nor feigned smile. He seemed to spend much of his existence in a quite sunny mood.

The pathway reached the lakeside. “This is my favorite part,” Kam explained. "I like to watch the swans. If you look there's a black one!” Pie cast his eyes over the small, still body of water, but kept one eye on his friend. Such an odd group they made: an ex-gang member, an angel, and an orphan from India.

Kam reached out and tucked a smallish hand into the crook of Pie's elbow. A very nice group they were, thought Pie.

“Hey, faggots!”

Pie sighed, but walked on. Ignoring them was usually the best line of defense. Although he also found himself wishing for an AK and a Bowie knife.

“HEY, FAGGOTS!” But, they were now in the pathway, blocking it. Three of them. They looked young, as Pie had expected. Some years back, he may have been one of them, he sadly reflected.

“We were just walking. May we pass?” Pie asked. He was a little concerned. He usually could rely on his great size to intimidate annoying people, but these boys were rather overgrown themselves.
They looked as if they spent the time when they were not in the tattoo parlor in the weight room. He scanned them, trying not to let his nervousness show, as he suspected they might be packing hidden weapons as well. He felt certain he could handle them, but was nervous about any injury befalling his companions in the ensuing melee.

“Take your faggy selfs out of our park, fags.”

Ah, always creative. “We simply want to walk. Kindly let us pass,” Pie tried.

“I'LL KICK YOUR- Ulp!” Pie had not seen him move, but little Kam was there, holding the leader, the biggest one, up by his collar.

He was completely up off the ground, his feet kicking, struggling to get away.

The smile had not faded from Kam's face. “Since you seem to possess some prejedices, let me also explain to you that I am in fact, and angel, whereas my friend is human. So we are mixing blood.”

The leader continued to grab impotently at Kam's hand. His two friends had already scattered in fright.

“The child in the carriage is human as well. He has, sadly, experienced some trauma in his life, so we are striving to create a nurturing environment for him. Now, I wouldn't call what you and your friends were doing fostering a nurturing environment, would you? So, I would like to kindly ask you to please stop. And leave us alone. And leave the park. And never come back. Would that be acceptable?”

The boy gave only a strangled gasp.

“And I might also mention one other thing, as the baby is human, and I am an angel, I am therefore his personal guardian angel, and shall act accordingly. Now, is this all understood?”

“Waaaaaa....” gurgled the boy.

“All righty then,” said Kam, suddenly letting go. The boy fell on his butt, but then scrambled up, and quickly scampered away, panting.

Kam looked at Pie. “I work for two lawyers, so I tend to be detail-oriented with these kinds of things," he explained.

“Ah,” said Pie.

“Could you hold him for a moment? He's kicked off the blankets again,” said Kam, who was holding Jyoti. Pie pulled the tiny boy into his grasp. He looked so terribly small in the crook of Pie's broad arm, like a kitten.

Kam fiddled with the blankets. “Aw, you look so natural like that!” he told Pie.

“Six brothers and sisters,” Pie explained, carefully handing back the child.

Kam positioned Jyoti back in the carriage. He looked up. “Oh, look! There's the black one!”

Pie shielded his eyes. Yes, it was visible in the flock that had just alit on the water nearby. Kam began pushing the carriage again.

Pie offered his elbow. Kam put his smallish hand inside, and they continued down the path, by the lakeside.
