Rating: PG-13
Summary: Toki talks to Sariel
Warnings: AU, slash, swearing, abuse
Notes: Notes after the jump
This was written as a present for
wikdsushi, who, along with beta-ing an early, very rough version of this AU, has just been plain sweet and inspiring all along. Anyways, her prompt was something COMPLETELY DIFFERENT, so this is kind of an object lesson in What Happens when Tiki Attempts Slash. *sigh*
In terms of the continuity, this happens some time after the end of Little Wing (Chapter 13).
Scars
Charles sat on a balustrade at Mordhaus, flicking cigarette ashes. It was a bit late in the season to be sitting outside like this, but the sun was out, shining on the gardens at Mordland.
He was thinking about something. But, he wasn’t sure quite what.
Someone was behind him. He turned. Toki.
Toki was holding one of his model airplanes. Charles wasn’t sure why, but this made him smile. Just a little bit.
“Model plane?” he asked. Toki nodded silently, and came to stand near him.
Toki wanted to say something. Probably one of the guys had been a jerk to him again. If you were quiet for long enough, it usually came out. Toki was like that.
“Charles,” the Norwegian finally began, “when you ams da angel…”
Oh boy. That was unexpected. Something existential? Charles felt even more ridiculously unqualified than usual. He wished it were Nathan instead, and he’d put away a few glasses of Scotch first. Single malt seemed to help with epistemological issues.
“Yeah?”
“I ams seed that you gots da scars.”
Oh. Charles took a very long drag on his Marlboro, struggling to keep himself from glaring. Keep your voice even, he told himself. “OK.” He finally said, as much to himself as to Toki.
“Ams them from your fathers?”
“No. No. They’re from…. They’re from something else. Someone else.”
“When I ams a kid, my dad ams….”
OK, I can handle this one. I can handle this. He turned to look at Toki. “Yeah. Your father did stuff to you. I know. He shouldn’t have done it. We’ll never let anyone do that to you again. Ever. OK?”
Toki had a strange expression. “No ones should ams does dat to you Charles.”
“Toki… It was different. That was different for me. I let him.” He looked away, back towards the gardens. “I wanted him to.”
“He ams should not do dats to you.” Somehow, Toki had put down the plane, and stood, his hands light on Charles’ shoulders.
“No, Toki.” It took everything to keep his voice soft, nonthreatening. “You don’t understand. It’s OK, but you don’t understand.”
“We cans makes them betters,” Toki murmured. He was unbuttoning the top few buttons Charles’ shirt.
“No, you really don’t need to. You don’t….”
Toki’s slim fingers were touching one of the scars, so lightly. Charles could feel the calluses he’d developed, from playing guitar. “What ams dis one?”
“He…. He hit me. I think. I don’t know. I can’t remember any more.” And Toki had leaned over and kissed the scar, so softly and gently.
“I….”
“And dis ones?”
“He knocked me over. He knocked me over. And…. And I hit the edge of a counter. And…. And it bled.” It had been so long ago. But it was like it was yesterday. It was like it was right here. Right now. Like Toki’s lips on his chest.
“And dis?”
“He…. I broke a rib.” Please. I can’t choke up. Please….
“Cans you bes the angels, Charles’? He ams so pretty.”
“No. No, Toki.” He was whispering. “I get mean when I’m that guy. Sometimes…. Sometimes I get mean.” He was stroking Toki’s hair. It was fine. Like a child’s.
“You won’t ams be means to me.”
And Charles had undone the rest of the buttons on his own shirt. And he was someone else, someone soft and silver.
And so Sariel held Toki in his arms. He held him for a long time.

Date: 2010-12-01 04:39 am (UTC)Now that I'm reconstituted again, it saddens me to think that no one has ever tried to kiss Toki's scars and make them better. That he could do this for someone else makes me all misty-eyed.
As much as I love Sariel and Ganesh together, Toki brings Charles a small bit of innocence that Sariel needs to make him feel newly created again, and therefore more in love with himself.

Date: 2010-12-01 05:05 am (UTC)Something I thought about Sariel/Ganesh (and yes, I've mused about this!) is that in this AU, Charles has this tendency to get into weird, fraught relationships, like he's fooling around with Pickles who's ALSO in his band and ALSO he may have kind of fatherly feelings towards. He also tends to let himself fall into stuff, so I can't say never, but one thing I wanted to do with Ganesh is here's a character who's *just* his boyfriend. Which, is complicated enough. :D

Date: 2010-12-01 06:35 am (UTC)I feel like I've sort of neglected Toki so far in this fic. ('Cause, you know, the TOO MANY FRICKIN' CHARACTERS thing.) For one thing, I'm just curious how someone with this crazy mad religious upbringing is gonna react to all these angels and gods suddenly hanging out in his living room, eating popcorn and watching Citizen Kane.
